Radolfzell: Stinking toilets yet again!

June 21st, 2011

Regular readers of this blog will know by now that we have a real thing about stinking toilets. If a restaurant or a bar can’t ensure that their toilets are up to standard what does it say about the rest of their establishment?

Recently we went for a late night drink in Radolfzell. We found a really good bar, with a great terrace. The bar was il Postino at Teggingerstrasse 5, 78315 Radolfzell.

The men’s toilet though was disgusting in terms of it’s smell. It appeared on the surface very clean and by all accounts the womens toilets were fantastic but the auto flushing system in the mens let the establishment down badly. Ok we’re giving the place the benefit of the doubt because it seemed an excellent bar it all other senses and we got a couple of drinks after midnight. Our recommendation to the owners is to get the mens toilet sorted as soon as possible! Apart from this the bar is well worth a visit.

Konstanz where are the late night restaurants?

June 20th, 2011

Sunday night in Konstanz appears to be very dead for a tourist town. We started looking for a place to eat at about 10.15. It took us all of 30 minutes to find somewhere despite have a vehicle!

We found Steakhause Hexenküche at Bodenstrasse 30, D-78462, Konstanz. Great steaks and they took our order at around 11pm. Friendly staff to compliment the excellent food. It is a pleasure to recommend them for a late night meal. Thanks!

Now where else could we go? Most other places we tried were in the process of closing, otherwise it would have been very traditional German food. Not a real choice for us! Let us know if you have any recommendations!

Frankfurt Christmas Market

December 17th, 2010

Why? why? why?

Why is the Frankfurt Christmas Market not open after 9pm?

Thousands of people are still about at 9pm. It would be great if it could be open a bit later. 10pm would be an improvement. Midnight would be ideal. Go on Frankfurt Christmas Market give it a try next year!

Fat Cat Cafe Northampton

November 27th, 2010

We wouldn’t normally write about a chain bar/restaurant however a late lunch has prompted us to say congratulations to the chef at the Fat Cat Cafe in Northampton. What impressed us was how well the food was presented, and the flavours. It was great. To be honest it was one of the nicest meals out, food wise, we’ve had for a while. It was also great value for money. 2 excellent meals, for £13. It might have been so good because we simply weren’t expecting it to be so! However I’d recommend this chef to any restaurant in town. If you need a new chef for your restaurant go and try out the food here. If you don’t need a new chef but want an excellent meal visit the Fat Cat Cafe on Bridge Street in Northampton.

Dali’s in Blackrock

November 24th, 2010

Our experiences at Dali’s in Blackrock have always been good. The food is consistently excellent. It is a little more expensive than many places we go however the whole experience makes it worth it. The service is fantastic! The only criticism is on two visits they have attempted to charge us for a more expensive wine than we have ordered. Must also mention the large party of 40 something women whom spoilt our last visit because of how loud they were …. however this is very unusual. They have a good set ‘early bird menu’ which is available all night on most nights of the week. It is a great place to go for an enjoyable dinner. It is a great venue for a special night! Enjoy! ……please let us know if you agree!

Yamamori Noodles Dublin

November 24th, 2010

Now here is a place to visit for dinner! Yamamori Noodles, 71 -72 South Great Georges St, Dublin 2. Simply great food, an excellent atmosphere and, for Dublin, reasonably priced. On our last visit we both had Ishi Yaki Bibimbap. It consisted of a huge clay hot pot of food which you had to mix together. It was a substantial meal. On previous visits we have had other dishes. Whenever we are in Dublin we tend to head back here. The staff are very welcoming, the service is quick and the noise levels are very reasonable so you can actually talk!! Let us know what you think!

Victoria Asian Cuisine, Monkstown Dublin

November 21st, 2010

We visited the Victoria Asian Cuisine in Monkstown, Dublin, a couple of weeks ago. Firstly, the positive! They did serve us quite late! Well late if you call 10.45pm late!

Food wise the meal was disappointing. The portions were very small despite being €18 or so per dish. The 4 dishes we had amongst the 4 of us were not really large enough for a full dinner. The food quality was okay but not impressive. Some vegetables in the dishes would have gone a long way to improving both the quality and the quantity. We left hungry!! Does anything more need to be said? I don’t think so!

The Temple Bar

November 21st, 2010

We had a late night drink in The Temple Bar in the Temple Bar district of Dublin last night. This is the area which appears to be the social centre of Dublin. Thousands of people visit this area each week, Could we get a real late night drink???? No! No! No! The place appears to close at 2.30am on a Friday night. The bar was packed at 2.30am. The security staff then immediately came through moving everyone into the front bar where they could finish their drinks and then depart.

For this sort of thing to happen in Dublin’s main social centre is simply astonishing! Why no drinks after 2.30am? The same appears to be the same in other parts of Temple Bar, and I suspect elsewhere in Dublin! Tell me what are the laws in Ireland for drinking after 2.30am. Are we not sensible enough to make our own decisions about when we stop drinking in an evening? Many other european countries have no problem in serving us 24 hours a day, why not in Ireland?

Some explanation please! I must admit I was disappointed. Besides this get out of here at 2.30am attitude it is a great pub to visit. Its my favourite in the Temple Bar area. Each time I return to Dublin I seem to end up there!

Deprived of a late drink at Hotel Leonardo in Weimar!

November 10th, 2010

Surprise hit us recently when staying at the Hotel Leonardo in Weimar! The house bar is only open until midnight! Several people, including ourselves, were deprived of a late drink on the night we attempted to drink there!

Come on Hotel Leonardo in Weimar! You can do a lot better!!!

Weimar – A Cultural Interlude

July 20th, 2010

We had reason this last week to visit Weimar. The town which brought us Bauhaus style, and where Goethe was most influential.

The night life here can be disappointing. Tonight for instance has seen us in exile within the hotel bar. At least the Hotel Leonardo in Weimar actually has a house bar – despite there only being 7 patrons tonight the bar has been active! Most other nights in our week’s stay in Weimr has seen us in the centre of the town. One place of note is the Hibrido, a cafe, restaurant, bar and pension – details can be found on their web site: http://hibrido-weimar.de/ . In our few day in Weimar the Hibrido Weimar has become our regular. The service is good, the food is interesting and the service is great. Sunday brunch (served until 3 p.m.) was especially good. The late night service is also especially good – they were serving until after 3am. In several nights frequenting the bar into the late hours of the morning, not once were we thrown out and the service remained brilliant. Highly recommended for late nights out in a stylish yet laid-back environment!
